Well observed, well communicated to the reader, and done with enough humour to make me laugh while still being to the point. Further, it is an ebook that is priced appropriately, as very few are!
An excellent perspective on how the world works. You don't have to agree with any or all to benefit from the views.
Good thoughts tho a few points I disagree with, well written and enlightening.
Venkat Rao remains one of the best writers on the internet, especially on the topic of human nature.
If you haven't read a lot of him the title sounds ominous, but he truly means the "slightly" part. This is a book about how to deal with human beings as the socially competent ones deal with you learn the tricks behind good salesmen, negotiators and so on. Venkat is a geek and an academic, and so he finds many of the same things objectionable that you will... He just doesn't avoid those slightly-distasteful strategies.
The read seemed kind of disjointed at times, and I guess that's to be expected with what was originally a series of blog articles. I ultimately questioned whether the read was of value in my daily life and lost my interest about two-thirds of the way through. I've moved on to some more "traditional" reading in the business & personal success space -- Malcom Gladwell, Stephen Covey, etc. and am finding it much more engaging.
Some practical advice. Seems like more rambling and the author intentionally trying to appear clever (uses way too much of own defined acronyms which are boring to follow).
Wish there were more practical case studies.
As a woman, I found this book invaluable. I pride myself on doing the right thing but witnessed coworkers being rewarded for other reasons. This book came into my life at the right time. I had just read a book describing Google's "don't be evil" motto and while I admire this organization for their commtment on creating an environment where such constructs can exist, I quickly realized I am working in one where it does not.
Learning when to be slightly evil is an essential skill when attempting to ascend to the level in the organization where I might be able to make a difference.
